La Nueva Rumba
Restaurant exterior
Glenn Lindgren: Tampa’s La Rumba restaurant is famous for its salsa. Not the kind you eat, but the music you dance to.

Jorge Castillo: After 11:00 on weekend nights the restaurant’s modest dance floor is hopping with the sounds of Latin music.

Raúl Musibay: And the women! Wow! We’ve never seen so many beautiful ladies crowding the dance floor.

Glenn Lindgren: Even if you don’t dance, the people watching here is great.

Restaurant interior

Jorge Castillo: Music and dancing are fine, but we came for the food and we weren't disappointed.

Raúl Musibay: For starters, the asopado de camarones is a great shrimp and rice dish.

Jorge Castillo: On a hot day in Tampa, nothing tastes better than a cold salad. The salads at La Rumba are great. We especially like the ensalada de pulpo -- a fresh salad that features crispy greens and delicious slices of octopus.

Glenn Lindgren: They also do a very nice Caesar salad. Alone, it is a nice side dish. With the addition of chicken, it’s a meal in itself.

The place is small, but the inside is clean. The whole family loves to eat here.
Jorge Castillo: La Rumba is a traditional Cuban place serving all of the standards; the churasco, chuletas de puerco, and carne frita con tostones are all stand outs.

Glenn Lindgren: They do a nice job with seafood here. I especially like the shrimp in garlic sauce. You get a nice serving of shrimp in a delicious olive oil based sauce that is heavy with the great flavor of garlic and spices.

Jorge Castillo: There was no lobster on the menu when we visited, but they had an excellent cherna rellena con mariscos -- a flounder stuffed with seafood.

Glenn Lindgren: If you love chicken, La Rumba gives you several excellent choices. The grilled chicken breast in a lemon sauce is a great combination of flavors.

Jorge Castillo: The chicken is tender and moist and the lemon sauce has just the right amount of citrus bite.

Raúl Musibay: Our Nephew Neil has been eating here a lot lately.

Glenn Lindgren: We’re not sure if it’s because of the great food or the pretty ladies.

Nephew Neil takes a seat at the counter. Any time after 1:00 p.m. is a good time to stop by and avoid the lunch rush.
