La Gran Havana
Jorge: If you are in Charlotte and want a very good lunch at a very reasonable price, check out Taste of Havana Cuban Restaurant.

Glenn: For just $5.95 -- Monday through Friday -- you can choose from several generously proportioned plates: picadillo, laconcito de cordero (lamb shank), ropa vieja, lechón asado, and pollo asado just to name a few.

Raúl: The pollo asado is a 1/4 chicken marinated in mojo and slow roasted. The meat is moist and the flavor is great. It would be even better if they gave you some extra mojo to pour over the meat at the table.

Glenn: Taste of Havana's lunch specials all come with the Holy Trinity of Cuban side dishes: white rice, black beans, and sweet fried plantain.

Jorge: Taste of Havana also serves several sandwiches at lunch, and the Cuban sandwich and the pan con lechón are real stand outs. They do put mayonnaise on several sandwiches, so if you don't like mayonnaise be sure to tell them to "hold it."

Glenn: For dinner, Taste of Havana serves all of the Cuban favorites. The good news here is that the prices are very reasonable and you get plenty to eat -- two things we find lacking at many restaurants today.

Jorge: The laconcito de cordero (lamb shanks) are an item we don't see very often in Miami. The shanks are braised and then slow roasted making them tender and giving them a very deep, rich flavor.

Glenn: In the mood for seafood? The Parrillada de Mariscos is a nice assortment of broiled seafood including shrimp, scallops, fish, and half a lobster tail.

Raúl: On weekends they have a guy playing a guitar here.

Jorge: But don't expect any dancing and wild partying. The atmosphere is pretty quiet here.

Glenn: Leave room for dessert. Especially nice is Taste of Havana's natilla, a homemade favorite in Cuban households. This rich, creamy pudding is not dense like flan. You can get it topped with a crunchy, dulce de leche sauce, but the sauce overwhelms the simple flavors of the natilla.

Jorge: The flan de queso is also very nice. It's the Cuban (and a lighter) version of cheesecake.
