Conga's Cuban Cafe has opened in Charlotte in the former location of the old "Taste of Havana" restaurant. The completely remodeled restaurant features all of the Cuban standards -- a few with a new twist or two.
Menu highlights include some stellar chicken entrees. The chicharrones de pollo are crunchy morsels of mildly seasoned tender chicken. One item you don’t see a lot is the Havana chicken. Yes, many Cuban restaurants serve a version of this half-chicken entrée, but at Conga’s they serve it with a Creole beef gravy. That’s right, beef!
The masitas de puerco fritas are crisply fried pork chunks served smothered with a pile of tangy onions and the churrasco here is as good as it gets with a nicely sharp chimmichuri sauce. Best ordered rare or medium rare, this tender skirt steak has a rich, beefy flavor.

Another good choice on the seafood side is a broiled fish fillet served “stuffed” with shrimp in Creole sauce. Yet another is another fish fillet grilled with fresh mango and pineapple chunks for a sweet, tropical flavor.
A full bar means only one thing -- tropical drinks, including the ever-popular mojito and a sweet daiquiri that will inspire some tropical beach longing. Finish your meal with a Cuban coffee and a slice of tres leches cake, sweet enough for two.
